Snow continues to inundate Ithaca at this hour. Thus far, the National Weather Service in Binghamton has issued a winter storm warning through Friday at 7AM. Tonight, 1-3 inches per hour will fall in the area and the storm will leave between 10 and 18 inches of snow on the ground.
With the heavy snowfall this afternoon Ithaca , Mayor Carolyn K. Peterson has activated the City’s snow routes effective 5:00 pm on Thursday, February 25, 2010 until further notice. This activation makes it unlawful to park or stand a motor vehicle, except for the expeditious loading or unloading of passengers, upon any portion of the following snow routes.

The snow routes include most of Collegetown and most of Downtown as well so take care to avoid parking in these zones. Vehicles parking in these areas are subject to towing.
Assistant Superintendent of Public Works Streets and Facilities for Ithaca Ray Benjamin spoke with WVBR and stressed that people should stay off the roads if they can. Benjamin told WVBR that crews are out and about this hour, clearing main roads and secondary streets as they are able. Benjamin expects his crews to be working through Saturday, clearing residential streets and cul de sacs as the snow diminishes.
The newest news this hour is that effective 8PM tonight, TCAT will be suspending service, this according to TCAT spokesman Patty Poist. Poist said that TCAT’s supervisors have been out all day and have finally deemed conditions too treacherous for service to continue tonight.
