State Street Now Also Dr.
Martain Luther King Jr. Street
State Street will also be known as Dr.
Martin Luther King Jr. Street.
The Ithaca board of public
works voted unanimously on the resolution.
According to the
Ithaca Journal, the street will officially be renamed on Martin
Luther King Day on January 19th. The first signs will go up then.
It should be noted that for official business and emergency
response, the street will still be referred to by its original
name, State Street.
The debate over renaming a street has been
ongoing for four years. Proponents of the bill wanted to rename a
prominent street to properly memorialize Dr. King, noting that all
other streets named after prominent African Americans were small
and were not fitting tributes. Opponents of the bill spoke of
State Streetís history and their reserves about renaming one of
the most notable roads in Ithaca.
