NYC approves proposal for cap on the amount of ounces that are allowed to be sold per bottled soda drink.
Thursday, New York City’s Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s proposal of a 16 ounce cap on sweetened bottled drinks, was approved by the New York City Board of Health. This cap will apply to beverages sold at New York City restaurants, delis, movie theaters, Sports venues and street vendors. This ban however, does not include drinks that are 100% juice nor does it apply to drinks sold in grocery of convenience stores like 7/11. Bloomberg tweeted thursday that the obesity epedemic needs to change. However, soft drink companies are condemning Bloombergs proposal because it will cut their profits. This ban will go into effect on March 12,2013.
