The SPCA of Tompkins County plans to close the SPCA Annex at the Shops at Ithaca Mall effective January 1st, 2018, according to executive director Jim Bouderau. The Annex opened in 2009 “in response to overcrowding at the Pet Adoption Center on Hanshaw Road,” Bouderau says.

“The Annex has been a tremendous success for the SPCA,” he adds. The year it opened, the SPCA “saw over 1,600 cats coming into the shelter. By comparison, in 2016, that number of cats entering the shelter was a little over 1,200.”

“It has been increasingly financially difficult and time consuming to keep the Annex going year-round, and it has become clear that we only really need the Annex during our peak times in our busy summer kitten season,” Bouderau says.
