Facility Now Known as “Ithaca Tompkins International Airport”
New York State officials today announced completion of the $34.8 million modernization and expansion of the Ithaca Tompkins International Airport, revitalizing the facility with contemporary passenger amenities, including a larger terminal with new passenger terminal gates and boarding bridges, all designed to ease travel and promote economic growth for the Southern Tier.
The airport redevelopment project nearly doubled the size of the passenger terminal and added new gates and passenger boarding bridges. The airport features enhanced security measures and modern passenger amenities, including spacious waiting areas equipped with charging stations, additional seating, more efficient passenger check-in and baggage handling, post-security food and beverage options, additional retail opportunities, and an indoor children’s play area. A new canopy over the front entrance protects travelers from inclement weather.
“Three years ago, we were wondering where we would find financial support to fix post-9/11 security issues in our aging terminal,” said Airport Director Mike Hall. “Then Governor Cuomo invested in a total makeover of the facility that raised it to world class standards and made it an International portal to our global market. Thank you, Governor Cuomo, for ensuring that Ithaca Tompkins International Airport will remain a vital asset in our growing upstate economy”
“We are beyond excited about our new terminal!” said Martha Robertson, Chair of the Tompkins County Legislature. “We are grateful to the Governor for his generous support, to the union workers who kept the project on time and on budget, and to Airport Manager Mike Hall and his incredible team for keeping the airport open and the construction on track all throughout this challenging year. We are also excited that the new terminal is being heated by a geothermal system supported by solar – truly the 21st century gateway to Tompkins County that demonstrates our commitment to a sustainable future.”
City of Ithaca Mayor Svante Myrick also added his praise for the Airport expansion project. “This much appreciated support from the State and the Governor has transformed the Tompkins County International Airport into a world class facility that is welcoming to visitors and local travelers alike” Mayor Myrick stated. “Tompkins County's leadership has created an entrance into Ithaca and the surrounding area - and I'm grateful for all their hard work and investment."
The new Airport will be celebrated at a community event in January, date to be announced.
