It was a crazy week in the NFL with the Jets defeating the Saints and the Bills starting Jeff Tuel at QB the week CJ Spiller returns.
Week 9 was eventful one in the NFL. It started Thursday with the Dolphins snapping a 4 game losing streak to defeat the Bengals 22-20 on an overtime safety. It ended with Chicago shocking Green Bay at Lambeau on Monday Night Football after knocking out Aaron Rodgers with a left shoulder injury in the first quarter. In between you had Eagle QB Nick Foles throw for 7 TDs in a rout of the Raiders, OT games in Seattle and Washington, but the craziest outcome was the Jets controlling Drew Brees and the Saints and coming away with the upset, 26-20 at the Meadowlands.
The Jets kept the New Orleans offense off balance all day, causing the Saints to use all 3 first half time outs in the first quarter and get 2 delay of game calls, one of which came directly after a timeout. The D picked off Brees twice and almost a third time but it got taken back on a penalty. The corners also played much better this week; Cromartie had one of the interceptions and Milliner only allowed 2 touchdowns this week instead of 4, both to Joey Graham who finished with 116 yards.
The Jet offense was equally as impressive. Playing thin at receiver without Holmes or Cumberland, they relied more on the run and it paid off. Chris Ivory stepped up especially; he had 139 yards and a touchdown. Nick Foles was also 4 for 4 in field goal attempts keeping him at perfect 23 for 23. The Jets have a bye next week so they can hopefully break their cycle of winning only odd numbered games when they host the Bills the following week at 1.
The Bills put up a good fight Sunday against undefeated Kansas City but ultimately lost 23-13. They held the 10-3 half time lead and the defense didn’t allow a touchdown in the game but the injuries did them in again. The good news is CJ Spiller’s back; he ran for 116 yards Sunday but Thad Lewis is now out and EJ Manuel still isn’t practicing so Buffalo was forced to go with Jeff Tuel at quarterback. In the red zone up 7 in the third, Tuel threw a pick 6 which was run back 100 yards by Sean Smith. Although they had hope for at least half of a football game, the Bills season is all but over now. They’re 3-6 and face the struggling Steelers next Sunday at 1.
The Giants had a bye this week so they didn’t get a chance to expand on their 2 game win streak but they’ll be back at it Sunday when they host the 3-5 Raiders at MetLife Stadium at 1.
