UMHA Puts Service in Action to Help Homeless on MLK Day

Utica, New York:   In honor of Martin Luther King,Jr. Day of Service, AmeriCorps members and volunteers will be conducting homeless street outreach services in the City of Utica.  Volunteers will be distributing information, food, and blessing bags to homeless and people in need at various locations on Monday, January 20 between 3:30 and 5:30  p.m.  For information on how you can get involved and provide donations for the event, please call 315.982.3731 or email cnyhirc@gmail.com.


Make it a Day ON not a Day OFF is the theme of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service on Monday, January 20th.   Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service is a way to honor his life and teachings by engaging in community action that continues to solve social problems. Service breaks down barriers by bringing people from different experiences together – volunteering can unite Americans of all ages and backgrounds while building stronger communities.


AmeriCorps is a program that engages more than 80,000 Americans in intensive service each year at nonprofits, schools, public agencies, and community and faith-based groups across the country. In its 8th year,  the UMHA AmeriCorps members help people move out of poverty by focusing on community needs such as homelessness, economic opportunity, poverty reduction, human services, housing, financial literacy, job development, service coordination, youth, elderly and disabled, and veteran services.  Members are assigned to work at local agencies serving the disabled, refugees, and immigrants as well as the Utica Public Library Outreach Center, Cornerstone Church, Our Savior Lutheran Church, public housing developments, and other locations through the UMHA Homeless Street Outreach Program.  The UMHA is currently recruiting AmeriCorps members.  For more information, call 315-982-3731.
