We've got something a little different than the Sports Shot here right now, we bring you instead an early-evening rendition of the soapbox. Now, you might have heard us earlier discussing how certain extremely conservative pundits were mocking President Obama for asking for spicy mustard on his burger (it's way more elitist than "special sauce"), but this tiny example is just one in a recent tradition of railing against anything and everything that the president says or does, no matter how inconsequential it is. I think Rush Limbaugh might have started it with his whole I hope the President fails thing. Heres my question: since when do the neo-cons think that its patriotic to hope that their democratically elected leader (yes, he counts even if you disagree with him) fails? I hope they realize that if Obama fails, beyond the hyper-partisan BS, that America will suffer. If all of Obamas reforms dont work I sincerely hope that they do then America is going to be in serious trouble. And thats what the Republicans want?
Now, I wasnt a huge fan of George W. Bush and Im still not. I think that his policies were incredibly damaging to this country in a variety of ways. He sank our foreign policy in the toilet and forgot to flush. But did I ever, EVER actively want his policies to fail? Youd have to be crazy to hope that the leader of your country messes up. Even though I didnt agree with most of the things he did and thought many of those decisions were dead wrong once they were made I couldnt help but pray that they were the RIGHT decisions, and that it would be better if I was wrong rather than have the president lead the country in the wrong direction.
The GOP appears not to share this sentiment. They not only believe that theyre right (and who can blame them? Everyone is going to say that what they think is right), theyre so dead-set against the idea of them being wrong that theyd rather see America get pulled into the gutter than have to admit that the President made the right call. Thats ego taken too far, but what else should I expect from Rush Limbaugh?
The media (not ALL of the media, but some individuals, like, for example, a guy whose name rhymes with Men Peck) has got to wake up and realize that its got more important things to do than report (ad nauseum) on what condiment Obama put on his burger, and incite panics with talk of fascismbecause nothing says fascism like a democratically elected leader with 4 years in office and a legislative and executive branch complete with checks and balances. All Im saying is that the media needs to realize that they have a responsibility to inform the people, and we need to stop watching their garbage.
