At Cornell University today, the Cornell Daily Sun Sponsored a candidate forum for the student trustee election. Of the eleven candidates, only nine attended the forum.
The candidates came from various backgrounds. Andrew White is a Freshmen, Ray Mensah is the president of the Cornell College Republicans, Vince Andrews, Andrew Brokman and Asa Craig are on the Student Assembly, and others had various experience with Cornell groups.
During the forum, two recurring themes ran through each candidate's campaigns: the need to increase financial aid even in the light of the endowment's decline and the need for more communication with the student body. All candidates pointed to the need for more transparency. Some outlined specific plans, such as Bill Imperiale calling for a public polling of students and office hours Ray Mensah calling for Town Halls.
While many candidates found themselves stumbling over themselves agreeing with each other, some took the chance to differentiate themselves. Eli Luxembourg, a sophomore, pointed out that most students did not truly care about the trustee board and that learning to communicate with the other board of trustees was unnecessary, simply because they were people too. Others, such as Craig, Imperiale, Brokman, Andrews and Mensah, pointed to their experience as being student leaders and flouting their connections with administration officials and student leaders. Even a few attempted to interject humor into the dry forum, with Brokman's jokes unfortunately, falling flat.
Most who attended were impressed. Kate Dutch, current Student Trustee told WVBR "I felt that the forum was very useful. I learned a lot about the candidates I did not know and found out more about those I did have relationships with beforehand." Al Miller, Executive Vice President of the IFC, told WVBR "I felt all the candidates are very qualified for this position. I only wish there was more time for the audience to ask questions."
Voting for the Student Trustee Election Begins April 12th at 8:00AM.
