Hockey, Basketball, and Wrestling all to have home contests
Original Airdate: Thursday, November 19, 2009. This is a part of the 93-Second Sports Shot series. 93-Second Sports Shots air weekday nights at 6pm.It's an exciting time to be a fan of Cornell Sports. The Men's Hockey team is coming off of a great season, in which they reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament, consistently being ranked one of the top 10 teams in the nation throughout the season. The Men's Lacrosse Team made it to the national finals, suffering a heartbreaking overtime loss to the Syracuse Orange. Wrestling is once again one of the top squads in the nation, returning National Champion Troy Nickerson. And Men's Basketball is coming off of the heels of a second straight Ivy League Championship, an NCAA Tournament appearance, and big wins against 2 nonconference teams to start the 2009-2010 season.
This brings me to my dilemma. With hockey, basketball, and wrestling all at home this weekend, I have to figure out which of these stellar teams to go and see. My natural loyalties lie with hockey, but with the strong start to the basketball season, as well as the possibility of opening some eyes nationwide by going 3-0 against teams with national reputations before we travel to Syracuse next Tuesday gives the basketball game a strong case. And the perennial powerhouse wrestling team is always an exciting thing to see.
My solution is relatively simple. Why limit yourself to seeing only one sport? If you've got three great games that you could see, why not take advantage of all of them? So here's my suggestion. Go to the basketball game early to get the free t-shirt, watch the opening tipoff, and then head over to the hockey game, which is starting 10 minutes later than usual. Stay there until the first intermission, then head over to the Friedman Wrestling Center for a few minutes to catch a wrestling match or two. Then on your way back to Lynah Rink, stop by Bartels to catch the rest of the first half of the basketball game, and then go back to the hockey game. From then on, you'll have an idea of which games are going to be better, so use your judgment to decide where to go. But that's just my opinion.
