If you haven't been paying attention or have been living under a rock for the past year or so, the NBA's 2010 free agent class is a star-studded one, including players like LeBron James, Dwayne Wade, Chris Bosh, Dirk Nowitzki, Joe Johnson, Amare Stoudamire, and many others (that is of course if none of these guys resign with their respective teams). Here's what I believe should happen:
From the players' point-of-view: shouldn't players care more about winning than money? I've heard guy's like James say winning is more important than max contracts, so why not take lesser contracts? Here's what I propose. Why don't 3-5 elite players come together and say, “Ok, if we just all join the same team, we'll go down as one of the greatest teams ever. We'll still make a ton of money, and we could shower in all of the endorsements we'd have.” That team would easily go down as one of the greatest teams of all time.
Now from the GMs' perspective: for a team like New York or New Jersey who has a lot of money to spend, instead of spending it all on one player, why not spend it on a few cheaper players that are just as good? Instead of throwing all your money at a LeBron James or a Dwayne Wade, how about spending the same amount on 2 or three guys like Dirk, Bosh, and Joe Johnson. It may cost you slightly, but two or three of those combined is probably more beneficial to a team than one superstar.
We don't know much about what's going to happen in the summer of 2010, but what we do know is that some teams are going to be shaken up and rearranged. And I can tell you one thing for sure…I'm definitely looking forward to it.
