Suspended Reality
What's The Deal With Sports Suspensions?
Original Airdate: Friday, April 17, 2009. This is a part of the 93-Second Sports Shot series. 93-Second Sports Shots air weekday nights at 6pm.
In a recent Angels, Red Sox game Josh Beckett threw a pitch over the head of Bobby Abreu. This in turn caused a bench clearing brawl that had a few players ejected. But this is beside the point. Whether or not throwing over the head of Abreu was intentional or not Beckett received a six game suspension for his actions. My problem is with suspensions, professional sports players are expected to abide by a certain "sportsman's code" and when they fail to do so they are subject to punishments, aka suspensions.

I don't understand the logic of allowing players to appeal suspensions, especially in the MLB. The difference between a four and six games (what would probably be the reduction of Beckett's) doesn't really make a difference in the grand scheme. For starting pitchers a four games suspension is given after every start. It's called rest. A four game suspension doesn't mean anything, a six game suspension only pushes back their stop in the rotation for a day or so. Make suspensions for starting pitchers a minimum of ten days to scare them from throwing at batters. Without at significant suspension pitchers can throw at will without fear of reprisal.

Oh, yeah, and stop suspending NFL players for killing pedestrians... ban them for life and send them to jail.

Michael Vick, enjoy that construction job, as you won't be under center anytime soon.
