After an exciting first weekend, there will be 12 more games to decide the 2014 Final 4.

If you’re like me, you spent the majority of the weekend watching college basketball, perhaps watching multiple games simultaneously on a bunch of different devices.  This has thus far been one of the most exciting tournaments in recent history with a record number of overtime games and almost all games coming down to the wire.  This Thursday starts the Sweet 16 which is set to be another great weekend.

3 of the 4 one seeds made it through the second and third rounds.  Unfortunately for me who picked them to win the whole thing, Wichita State went down in an emotional back and forth game yesterday.  They played Kentucky, who despite being an 8 seed started the season at number 1 in the country.  Shocker senior Cleanothony Early ended his career with a great effort, scoring 31 points in the 78-76 loss.   The wildcats move on to play Louisville, a 4 seed, this Friday.

Either a 10 or 11 seed will be in the elite 8 to battle the winner of tournament favorite Florida and UCLA, as Dayton and Stanford will face off Thursday in a sweet 16 game that probably busted a lot of brackets.  As an 11 seed, few people were surprised when Dayton upset 6th seeded Ohio State in the second round, but they picked up a round 3 win over 3 seed Syracuse 55-53 to continue their season.  Stanford played a great game against the Kansas Jayhawks, one of 2 number 2 seeds to not make it to the fourth round as Villanova was handled by UConn 77-65. The Cardinal won 60-57 while holding Kansas to 32% shooting from the floor.

Another highly touted fourth round game pits top seeded Virginia against Michigan State, a 4 seed who many picked to win the south region and make it to the final 4.  I’ll be at that game this Friday at 10 at Madison Square Garden wearing a lot of Orange and rooting for the Cavs.  They are the last surviving ACC School even though 5 made the tournament since Duke and Syracuse, both 3 seeds, played very poorly in the last 2 rounds.  Virginia has been underrated all season – despite beating Duke in the ACC tournament finals some analysts still thought the Blue Devils deserved the last 1 seed.  They have had two double digit wins to reach the sweet 16 but Michigan State is a tough team that won the big 10 tournament over Michigan, who is still alive as a 2 seed.

The last two games on Thursday are Wisconsin against Baylor, who blew out Creighton yesterday for their ticket to the Sweet 16, and Arizona will play San Diego State.  Friday, Iowa State will take on UConn and Michigan plays Tennessee.
