As
of yesterday, Cornell University was sending one of its teams to the NCAA
tournament. As of today, they are sending two. At a neutral court on Columbia's
Levien Gymnasium, the Cornell Lady Red dominated the Dartmouth Big Green and
eventually scored a 64-47 victory to earn an automatic bid for the NCAA
tournament. The location at which Cornell will play the first round of the
tournament will be announced later on today on ESPN's selection Sunday show,
which also holds true for the men.
Cornell won the game on a team effort,
by providing plenty of energy on both the offensive and defensive sides of the
ball. Center Moina Snyder led the team with 14 points, an impressive feat as she
often was faced up with Brittney Smith, the Ivy League Rookie of the Year and top
rebounder in the conference. Three other players scored in double figures for
Cornell. Ivy League Player of the Year Jeomi Maduka added 13 points on top of 8
rebounds. Shannan Scarsaletta scored 11 off the bench and sophomore guard Allie
Fedorowicz added 10 points, including two clutch 3-pointers.
The game was
exclusively covered by WVBR with live coverage throughout the game. Post game
interviews were conducted with Moina Snyder, Shannan Scarsaletta and Head Coach
Dayna Smith, all of whom stressed the value of team work and role players as the
formula for victory. Depending on their seeding in the NCAA tournament, Cornell
will play their first round opponent on either this coming Thursday or
Friday.
