ICSD Names New Superintendant
On Tuesday evening, The Ithaca City School District Board of Education unanimously appointed Luvelle C. Brown as superintendent.
Since 2006, Brown has worked as chief information officer of the Albemarle County Public Schools in Charlottesville, VA. Recent responsibilities have included leading the Virginia school district's strategic planning, accountability structures and administrative and instructional technology. Albemarle County is home to the University of Virginia, from which Brown received his bachelor of science, master of teaching, educational specialist and doctorate of education degrees. Previously, he was principal, assistant principal and teacher in the Albemarle and several other Virginia school districts.
According to the ICSD Board, Brown was chosen from a nationwide pool of 49 applicants after an eight-month selection process. The process included focus groups, community panels, and online surveys. Brown will replace Judith Pastel, who is retiring on December 31st after nearly 15 years of service as superintendant. Brown’s first official day will be on January 2nd, 2011. However, to ease the transition between Pastel and Brown, Brown will arrive in Ithaca some time before Pastel’s final day.
"Ithaca is a national leader in excellence and equity. I look forward to collaborative efforts involving the entire community resulting in ICSD becoming an international model for excellence in public education," Brown said in the statement from the Ithaca school district. Brown’s contract is to be effective through June 30, 2014.
