Ithaca's Super Walmart celebrated its grand opening Wednesday morning. After a 7:30 a.m. ribbon-cutting ceremony, doors were opened to the first customers at 8 a.m. The new store is located at 135 Fairgrounds Memorial Parkway and will now be open 24 hours a day.
After much remodeling, the Walmart has expanded to include a grocery section and a pharmacy. According to a news release from Walmart, this newly refurbished store will offer between 135 and 165 new jobs.
The biggest changes to the store are arguably the ‘green’ modifications. According to Walmart, energy-efficient improvements, such as skylights and LED lighting, will reduce electricity needs by up to 75%. Furthermore, environmentally friendly flooring will cover the 199,000-square-foot store. Consumers will shop on a floor made of recycled concrete materials, coated with a finish that reduces the need for chemical cleaners. Walmart hopes that these developments and others will reduce harmful effects on the environment caused by such a large compound.
Many Ithaca residents will notice the store’s new logo and color scheme. In fall of 2008, Ithaca’s Planning and Development Board was informed that the new design is part of a broader marketing plan for the company. Efforts are currently underway re-brand stores nationwide. Ithaca’s Walmart is one of the first to reveal the new design.
