Vote tomorrow for IPD grant
Tomorrow the Ithaca Common Council will vote to accept a $100,000 federal grant for the Ithaca Police Department. This controversial grant from Homeland Security is to be used for SWAT team gear including night-vision goggles and even a robot. While Ithaca was selected as one of the 20 to receive this grant from the Department of Homeland Security and the Office of Bomb Prevention, some locals are not in favor of the grant. In light of the event on August 9th in which an out of uniform sergeant drew a gun on two African American teens, the topic of weaponry and equipment for police departments has naturally fueled much debate concerning this grant. There is a petition against the approval and the vote will take place at 6pm tomorrow Wednesday September 3rd in the Common Council Chambers.
