Tompkins Learning Center offers great opportunities in education. The non-profit organization provides chances for those who want to learn reading, writing or to improve their English skills. Operating since 1976, the center reached many Ithacans who had a hard time with language or who wanted to continue their education. The center has two main departments: Adult Basic Learning and English as a second language. The volunteers are paired up with adult students who work on their reading, writing abilities. The program and course materials are designed to keep the student on track by reviewing previous lectures. Also it is made sure that the students follow the planned schedule even if the instructors leave.
Also immigrants, refugees and those who want to learn English benefit from the English as a second language program. Many express that this opportunity makes them feel like they are a part of the society. The tutors are also very enthusiastic and happy about seeing their work utilized quickly.
Tompkins Learning Center strives to eliminate the inequalities life brings to some people by providing high-quality education for adults. However, the demand is so high that even though they work for many hours they are still short of tutors.
