Anberlin isn't exactly a new band. They've been producing rather prolifically since their 2003 debut Blueprints for the Black Market. New Surrender, the 2008 album marks a big transition for Anberlin: the first album after signing with a major label and the first album produced by Neal Avron. (Anberlin had remained loyal to producer Aaron Sprinkle, who produced their demo and all albums during their time at Tooth & Nail Records.) New Surrender has been taking over the modern and alternative rock charts with singles like Feel Good Drag and Breaking.

Like Flyleaf, last week's spotlight, Anberlin has struggled to break out of the Christian rock stereotype. The band has played at Christian music festivals and were signed to Tooth & Nail Records (a historically Christian label) until recently. Drummer Nathan Young explains that Anberlin is not a "Christian band," they are Christians in a band.
