Mike Doughty returns to Ithaca this Friday, Novemeber 20th.
After spending much of the 90s as frontman for the jazzy alternative rock act Soul Coughing, Doughty set out on a quirky alt-rock solo career. Doughty toured heavily in support of his self-released album Skittish, amassing a steadily larger following for his forceful baritone and spare guitar accompaniment. In 2004 Doughty was signed to friend and former tourmate Dave Matthews's ATO Records label, where he released 2005's highly successful Haughty Melodic, singles "Madeleine and Nine" and "Looking at the World from the Bottom of a Well" finding radio airplay and spots in other diverse media outlets, including TV. Opening again for the Dave Matthews Band in the following tours, Doughty worked diligently in the studio to produce his latest record, Golden Delicious. Preceded by single "27 Jennifers" (a reworking of one of his earlier songs), the album delves into the mellow funk influences that characterize his horn, piano and organ-inflected acoustic rock.
Songs to check out: "27 Jennifers," "Grey Ghost," "I Hear the Bells," "Busting Up a Starbucks," "Fort Hood," "Put it Down"
