id=236|align=leftMay has turned out to be a difficult month for the metal community. One week after Ronnie James Dio's passing, Slipknot's Paul Gray was found dead on May 24th in a hotel room outside of his hometown of Des Moines, Iowa. The autopsy on Tuesday, May 25th proved to be inconclusive and police are currently awaiting toxicology results. No foul play is suspected.
Gray, better known as #2, was one of the three remaining original members of Slipknot, along with co-founder Shawn "#6/The Clown" Crahan and Joey "#1" Jordison. The band self-released Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat. on Halloween in 1996 but remained under-the-radar until their self-titled major label debut in 1999. On 09/09/09, the band re-released a limited edition of Slipknot in celebration of the 10th anniversary. Slipknot has been nominated for six Grammys, winning Best Metal Performance in 2006 for "Before I Forget".
Over the years, Slipknot had been both acclaimed and criticized for their nihilistic lyrics and aggressive stage shows, having been blamed (like many other metal artists) for the crimes of fans. The band members themselves have managed to keep relatively low profiles, partly thanks to their iconic masks. When Gray was arrested in 2003 for drug-possession, it was not the arrest itself, but the mugshot that garnered the most attention because the band is so rarely seen without their masks.
The band appeared at a press conference (sans masks) on Tuesday the 25th to discuss Paul Gray's death. Video available url=http://youtube.com/watch?v=X_niQxntSw4hereend-link.
WVBR extends our deepest condolences to Paul Gray's family and friends.
