An Open Letter to the Boss, from a not-so-casual fan
Dear Mr. Springsteen,
I was recently visiting my parents on Long Island and I heard a story from a New York City DJ. Apparently, her car was broken into, and the thief went to the trouble of going through her CD wallet and only stealing the Bruce Springsteen CDs. And apparently, when you got wind of this, you FedEx-ed her an autographed copy of every CD you ever released. That was a really nice thing to do, and I just wanted to say, "right on."
Now, I am not so naive as to say that I am your biggest fan. I'm aware that some people actually know all the words to "Blinded By The Light." But I will say the following things for myself:
1. Ask my friends. I will tell anyone who will listen that Born To Run is the greatest thing ever put on tape. I also can't say enough good things about The Wild, The Innocent & the E Street Shuffle, or Born In the U.S.A.
2. Without fail, when I walk into a bar that has a jukebox, I always put one of your records on. And without fail, 21-year old girls start dancing on each other to your music.
3. A few months ago I met a girl I kind of liked. She was hesitant to get romantically involved with anyone. She had also never heard "Thunder Road." I played it for her while working at this station. We have been dating exclusively ever since.
4. When you played in Buffalo this past November, some friends and I drove three hours from Ithaca to come see you. The concert went late into the night on a Sunday. Some of us are enrolled in classes at a prestigious institution in the Ithaca area. Some of us had classes very early on Monday. Some of us went to class having driven through the night on about an hour of sleep. Just so we could see you.
6. I start every one of my shifts with one of your songs, and usually play at least two more throughout the course of the shift. When I started DJing at this station this past summer, you were the 13th or 14th most played artist at this station. Now you're number 8.
So, I guess what I'm saying is that if I keep promoting you, you might just have a future in Rock 'n' Roll. And I think that's worthy of a signed CD or two.
